What Actually Keeps Running When the Grid Goes Down
Home Battery Backup: What Stays On When the Grid Goes Downs
It’s a Tuesday night in November. The wind picks up, the lights flicker once, and then the whole street goes dark. Somewhere in the house, a phone starts hunting for a signal, and someone goes looking for the good flashlight.
If you live in Bethesda, Potomac, McLean, or anywhere nearby, you know this moment. What most people don’t know is how much of it is optional. A well-designed home battery system doesn’t try to power everything. It powers the right things, automatically, and it tells you what’s happening while it does.
Here’s how that works with Savant Power, and what to decide before the next storm.
A battery is only as good as its plan
A home battery stores energy so your home can keep running when the grid can’t. How long that energy lasts depends less on the size of the battery than on what you ask it to run. Savant Power storage ranges from 20 to 50 kWh, with a 12.5 kW inverter and a 10-year warranty, so the system can be sized to the home instead of the other way around.
Choose what stays on
Start with a simple question: if the power were out for a full day, what would you actually need? For most families the list is short. Heating, lighting, and security come first, followed by a few essentials like the refrigerator and your internet connection. The pool equipment, the guest wing, and the second oven can wait.
Savant’s Redirect Power lets you send stored energy only to the circuits that matter during an outage, so the charge lasts longer. Savant Power Modules add flexibility here too, because you choose what to power without a separate critical load panel.
Storm Watch: ready before the weather arrives
A battery that’s half empty when the storm hits isn’t much help. Storm Watch quickly charges your batteries when a grid outage is likely, so you start the storm full. If your home also has solar, Eco Mode uses it to power the house and charge the batteries, drawing from the grid only when needed.
You’ll know what’s happening
Notifications alert you to power events, from a grid outage to a simple tripped breaker, which means no more wandering to the basement with a flashlight to check. You can also see where your home uses energy and adjust it with energy scenes, instead of guessing.
Planning for what comes next
More homes in the area are adding an EV charger, a hot tub, or electric appliances around the same time they add a battery. Savant Power Modules balance power across your existing essentials and these additions, which can help you avoid an electrical service upgrade. They can also turn off unnecessary circuits while you’re at work or away for the weekend.
If you drive an EV, a Level 2 charger connects to the same system, and you can schedule charging for off-peak hours.
Where to start
Three questions will take you most of the way:
- What has to stay on if the power is out for a day?
- What are you likely to add in the next few years?
- Who will look after the system once it’s installed?
Our process begins with a conversation about how you live, then moves through system design, engineering drawings, installation, and testing. After that, our service plans keep everything running year round. Bethesda Systems is HTA Certified, the national standard for home technology companies.
